Many teenagers have a feeling of ‘invincibility’ and believe that nothing bad can or will ever happen to them. For this reason, they are far more susceptible to falling prey to the notion that occasional or social drug use is just fine. The mere fact that they are young and have not experienced much of life lulls them into a false sense of security. For this reason, it is important to make sure your teenager understands the consequences of his/her actions. Signs Your Teen May Be an Addict Though your teenager may be able to ‘handle’ the occasional drug use in the beginning, there are signs when the problem begins to spiral out of control. Usually, one of the first things parents notice is a sudden drop in grades and a general lack of motivation. Missing school/classes and dropping out of activities they once enjoyed may also be an indication. Extreme mood changes, aggressive behavior, missing money, new friends, a change in sleeping patterns, and secretive behavior may also be signs. Sometimes, you may just feel that your child does not seem ‘right’. Do not ignore the feeling. Dealing with Your Teen’s Addiction The first step to dealing with your teen’s addiction is to actually recognize and admit there is a problem. Once you find that your child does have a problem with drugs or alcohol, it is imperative to receive help as soon as possible. This may mean checking him/her into a treatment facility for detoxification and follow up drug counseling. Overcoming an addiction is not easy for anyone, but it is especially difficult for an impressionable teen. You will need to be committed to helping your teenager through all phases his/her treatment.
